Visiting Scholarly Communications Program Officer

Association of College and Research Libraries

The Association of College and Research Libraries is seeks applications
for its Visiting Scholarly Communications Program Officer. This
independent contractor position is an integral part of ACRL's new
scholarly communications initiative, which is being developed to enable
ACRL to play a prominent national role in helping to reshape the system of
scholarly communication in partnership with other library and higher
education organizations concerned with these issues.

The Visiting Program Officer reports to the Executive Director of ACRL and
works in close collaboration with ACRL's Scholarly Communications
Committee and other ACRL units concerned with scholarly communications
issues. The officer is responsible for carrying out selected aspects of
ACRL's scholarly communications agenda, which is formulated by the
scholarly communications committee. The officer develops working
relationships with various library and higher education organizations that
are engaged in scholarly communications activities, (including but not
limited to SPARC and the ARL office of Scholarly Communications) and works
in partnership with these groups in the general areas of education,
advocacy, and coalition building. The program officer also develops and
participates in programs to educate librarians, faculty, and higher
education administrators about scholarly communications issues. The
officer serves as a visible spokesperson for ACRL on scholarly
communications issues and develops and coordinates advocacy and lobbying
efforts related to scholarly communications. The officer facilitates
research on the effects of the scholarly communications crisis,
particularly as they relate to smaller university, college, and community
college libraries.

We seek an experienced librarian who is familiar with both ACRL and
scholarly communications concerns and has the ability to establish
credibility with varied constituencies. The ideal candidate will have an
MLS degree, academic or research library experience, significant
understanding and experience in dealing with scholarly communications
issues, excellent communication, organizational, group process, and
leadership skills, as well as political astuteness. Strong candidates may
be either independent consultants or currently employed librarians who are
able to take a partial leave of absence from their work. .

Hours and compensation for the Visiting Program Officer position are
negotiable. The incumbent is not eligible for a vacation, holiday pay, or
benefits. It is expected that the successful candidate will carryout
his/her work at a setting away from the ACRL offices. The position will
require attendance at ALA Annual Conferences and Midwinter Meetings, ACRL
National Conferences, regular meetings and conference calls with the ACRL
Executive Director and chair of the ACRL Scholarly Communications
Committee, as well as meetings with professional library and higher
education associations. Other meetings and travel may be required. Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with ALA policy. This is
a one-year contract, subject to renewal.
