Re: Ads in online journals

One aspect of the issue of ads in scholarly journals that I don't recall
being mentioned in the discussion is the controversy about the fact that
advertisers in popular magazines appear to be PULLING their ads if and
when the magazine runs an article that they don't like. This is
construed, naturally enough, as an attempt to influence editorial policy,
i.e. content. (There is also similar controversy/discussion about the
influence of university donors on research directions, academic freedom
etc. at those universities.)

Buying a journal with ads cannot reasonably be seen as an endorsement of
the product by the purchaser (e.g. the library), but the relationship
between advertisers and editors is not so clear-cut in all cases- a
serious concern.
