I assume you are referring to the acquisition of companies by 
other companies, not the acquisition of books.

Peter Brantley of the Internet Archive was asking this very same 
question a couple months ago, though I don't believe he posted 
his query to this list.  I am sending a copy of this thread to 
him.

Presumably what is behind this inquiry is getting at the status 
of orphan works, no?
