Interesting piece on the Long Tail phenomenon in the Register. The data are all from the music industry. The conclusion is that most elements on the Long Tail are never purchased. There apparently is underlying research behind this article, but I have not seen it. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/07/long_tail_debunked/ If this article is true, it has implications for scholarly communications.
