The news below detailing the announcement from Atypon of the release of the Walter de Gruyter Reference Global scholarly content site (providing access to journals, books and reference works) may be of interest to liblicense readers. With regards, Nash Pal ---------------- Walter de Gruyter Launches Integrated Journals, eBooks and Reference Works Platform Built and Hosted by Atypon Systems BERLIN, Germany and SANTA CLARA, California, July 15, 2008- Atypon Systems, Inc., and Walter de Gruyter announced today the release of Reference Global, a new integrated online Journals, Books and Reference Work site for de Gruyter scholarly content. The platform can be accessed at www.reference-global.com and www.degruyter-online.com, with users able to choose between English and German language interfaces. Atypon Premium has a well established reputation as the premier journal content management system. Research and development throughout 2007 and early 2008 saw a major redesign of the Atypon platform (Literatum) that underpins the e-publishing sites of all Atypon clients. An extensive engineering program has expanded the capabilities of Literatum into a truly multi product platform, that handles books, reference works and other content types in an integrated and flexible way. Chris Beckett, VP of Sales and Marketing of Atypon Systems, commented: "The release of Reference Global for Walter de Gruyter has been the culmination of many months of engineering effort at Atypon; we have re-engineered our robust Journals platform, to handle multiple content types in a truly integrated way. Publishers can now use a single comprehensive set of administrative tools to manage the delivery of all their content to their readers - providing common services (access control, content management, business intelligence, and more) to publisher administrators, librarians, and researchers." Joachim Engelland, Director for Electronic Business at Walter de Gruyter, explains the benefits to their readers: "As far as the user searching for content is concerned the difference between books and journals has virtually disappeared. The integrated search interface will provide users with search results for both types of products." All of de Gruyter's journals are available on the new platform - including journals from the K.G. Saur and Max Niemeyer imprints which have not previously been available online. In addition, at launch Reference Global hosts the complete Handbooks of Linguistics and Communication Sciences (HSK) series, and an initial selection of monographs from 2007 and 2008. Around 400 eBooks will be added to the platform each year and the number of bibliographical reference works is also set to grow. Individual book chapters as well as journal articles can be downloaded as PDFs. Walter de Gruyter's CEO Klaus G. Saur comments: "With this new internet presence we have caught up with other international publishers. Up to now only the large STM publishers have integrated their book and journal content in this way. Being a mainly humanities publisher it puts us in a special position in this sector." About Walter de Gruyter Independent academic publisher Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG has been publishing books and journals in the fields of humanities, medicine, natural sciences and law for over 250 years. In 2006 de Gruyter acquired K.G. Saur and Max Niemeyer, thereby forming one of the largest academic publishers in Europe. De Gruyter now publishes more than 500 new books each year, almost half of which are in English, along with over 90 journals and a variety of additional online products.
