Thought some of you might be interested in the article referenced in the following DIG_REF list posting... Bernie Sloan **** "King, Hannah" <Hannah.King@HQ.DOE.GOV> wrote: In the current issue of C&EN (Chemical & Engineering News), vol.84, no.47, pp. 82-84, November 20, 2006, there is an article by this title, "Looming Threat to Society Journals," by Kimberly Douglas and Dana L. Roth of CalTech. his article discusses the threat the high cost of commercial subscriptions are presenting to libraries' budgets with respect to acquiring high quality society journals, and the alternative routes libraries and their users face: buy the journals or buy the articles. If chemists, engineers and others who read this magazine are not aware of why their favorite journal is no longer on the shelf, this will give them a good overview of the decisions librarians face when choosing where they will get the highest quality for the library dollar.
