NEWS RELEASE Blackwell to Publish an Additional 59 Journal Titles in 2006 Journals transferred to Blackwell see Impact Factor increase 21% Oxford, UK and Boston, MA - January 9, 2006 - Blackwell Publishing will begin 2006 with 39 new publishing partnerships and 59 journal titles added to its list. Six hundred and sixty-five societies now partner with Blackwell, further strengthening its position as the world's leading publisher for societies. In 2006, Blackwell will publish 805 medical, academic, scientific, and professional journal titles. Societies that transfer their journal to Blackwell are seeing a dramatic increase in their journal's Impact Factor, the most significant benchmark of a journal's value. Of the 19 ISI-ranked journals that transferred to Blackwell in 2001, the average increase in Impact Factor between 2003 and 2004 reached 21%. Blackwell's high quality publishing services help to distinguish a journal from others in the discipline and ensure that the journal reaches its full potential. "More societies are choosing Blackwell as their partner because they want to enhance the quality, stability, and reach of their journal," said Blackwell Publishing CEO, Renee Olivieri. "Because Blackwell understands the needs of societies better than any other publisher, we are able to provide the resources and strategic direction to help societies meet their goals." Blackwell's global teams are able to deliver comprehensive services to societies, including online publication, marketing and public relations, library sales and support, customer service and distribution, and membership management. Blackwell also provides expert guidance on a range of publishing issues, such as peer review, open access, and readership. "We chose to partner with Blackwell because of their excellent reputation for quality, their ties with professional societies and libraries, and their publishing and marketing expertise," said Ellis Rubinstein, President, New York Academy of Sciences. Blackwell will publish the Annals of the NYAS beginning in 2006. Since 1995 close to 400 journals have transferred to Blackwell Publishing. 165 of these were formerly self-published within a university department or by an academic or scholarly society. The remaining titles moved to Blackwell from competing commercial publishers, smaller university presses, or through acquisitions. During the same period, Blackwell Publishing launched 112 new journal titles in fast growing research areas, ranging from the study of heart disease and stroke to international economic theory and foreign policy analysis. "In an effort to further expand our international reach, the [International Communication Association] ICA needed a progressive publisher with global expertise, said ICA Executive Director, Michael Haley, Ph. D., CAE. "We found in Blackwell a publishing partner that can deliver on what is promised and help us achieve our growth objectives." The publishing partnership will commence in January 2006 and includes the ICA's flagship publication, the Journal of Communication, the top-ranked Human Communication Research, Communication Theory, and Journal of Computer Mediated Communication.
