ebrary Launches Perpetual Access

ebrary Launches New Perpetual Access, Online Book Product

Libraries can now create and own collections of ebrary titles under an
unlimited, multi-user or single-user access model that does not require
check-out

June 20, 2005 Palo Alto, CA Libraries now have a number of options
for licensing full-text books and other authoritative content from ebrary
(www.ebrary.com), a leading information services and technology provider.
The company today announced that in addition to subscription databases of
content from leading publishers, it is now offering a growing selection of
online books under a perpetual access model.

Unlike eBooks, ebrary's perpetual access titles do not require cumbersome
document downloads, and no check-out or check-in is required. ebrary's
online books can be cross referenced, are full-text searchable, and
integrate with a librarys ILS system and online subscription databases.
Additionally, ebrary provides reporting tools that show how content is
being used while protecting end-user privacy.

"In response to market feedback, we have created a model for creating and
owning integrated collections of online books that do not have the
limitations associated with most downloadable eBook products," said David
Bass, ebrary's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "At the same
time, we realize that when it comes to licensing content, one size does
not fit all. By providing both subscription and perpetual access titles
under several different pricing models, we hope to serve the diverse needs
of the library community as well as the patrons they serve."

ebrary currently offers thousands of online books under its new perpetual
access model from publishers including Taylor & Francis, McGraw-Hill,
Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, and Brill Academic
Publishers. The titles cover a wide range of subject areas geared toward
students and professions.

Libraries have two choices for purchasing ebrary's perpetual access
titles: They may pay a fee over list price to provide patrons with
simultaneous, multi-user access, or pay list price for single-user access.
ebrary's single-user access model does not require check-out or check-in
like most eBook products on the market today. If an online book is
available, a patron may instantly access it. If a document is in use, the
patron will be placed in a queue and notified once it becomes available.

To make it easy for libraries to build and manage databases of perpetual
access content, ebrary has developed the ebrary Ordering Platform (eBOP).
With eBOP, library selectors and staff can quickly search and browse
through ebrary titles under all available business models including
perpetual access and subscription. eBOP allows librarians to preview
titles in full-text before making a purchasing decision, and provides
collaboration tools for libraries and consortia.

Like ebrary subscription databases, the company's perpetual access titles
are delivered via the ebrary Dynamic Content Platform (DCP), which
includes the ebrary Reader and InfoTools. The ebrary Reader optimizes
page-by-page viewing of PDF documents online. InfoTools seamlessly links
search queries to multiple online databases and information on the Web.

Additional ebrary News

In a separate press release issued today, ebrary announced that it has
added more than 500 titles to its Public Library Complete subscription
database and has revised its pricing structure to make it more affordable
to the public library community. Read the press release at

About ebrary

ebrary provides technology solutions and information services that
students, employees, patrons, and staff need to be more productive,
competitive, and knowledgeable.

The company has pioneered the Dynamic Content Platform (DCP), a hosted
information delivery service that features a growing selection of more
than 60,000 titles from more than 200 leading academic, STM, and
professional publishers. ebrary licenses authoritative content such as
full-text books, reports, maps, and other authoritative documents under
both a simultaneous, multi-user subscription and perpetual access model.

Additionally, ebrary offers server-based solutions, to easily and
cost-effectively create remote collections and virtual content portals
from any PDF documents stored within a hard drive, database, or contentmanagement system.

All ebrary products feature the ebrary Reader, which optimizes online
viewing through the 'real-time' conversion of PDF documents into ebrary's
Exchange Data Format (EDF). EDF serves any PDF file, regardless of size,
through any connected Internet browser, one page at a time, making the
delivery fast and efficient for the viewer.

InfoTools is an advanced set of software features within the ebrary Reader
that provides much more powerful and efficient research capabilities than
editorial-based linking or multiple search queries. By selecting words
within a current document, end users can instantly link to relevant
information from other EDF or PDF documents, digital databases, and
resources on the Web.

Founded in 1999, ebrary is privately held and is headquartered in Palo
Alto, CA.
