Metadata Services Coordinator

The University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a tenure-track
library faculty position. Responsibilities:

* Provide leadership for the development of a user-centered metadata
infrastructure and local standards; articulate the relationship of new
schemes to the online catalog and other library databases and
applications; ensure the interoperability of metadata and online support
for digital projects, specialized collections, finding aids, licensed
resources and selected websites. * Implement appropriate metadata schemes
for various projects and create crosswalks between those schemes. *
Evaluate evolving standards and technologies and develop internal policies
and procedures to optimize quality and timeliness of access to data. *
Develop user-centered approaches to information management and
organization of knowledge assets. * Collaborate with Applications
Development Librarian, Web Development Librarian, and Heads of Digital
Projects and DataWorks to coordinate the implementation of seamless,
integrated access to information resources. * Supervise professional
catalogers. * Engage in research and service activities to meet
requirements for promotion and tenure.

Qualifications:

Required: ALA accredited MLS. Experience with a range of protocols
supporting the development of digital libraries.  Understanding of
metadata harvesting, crosswalks, Dublin Core, XML, and open URL.
Cataloging experience and understanding of MARC. Strong analytical skills.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to thrive in a team
environment. A strong commitment to the user and unabashed enthusiasm for
connecting the dots to create integrated access to information.
Demonstrated initiative and leadership abilities.  Skepticism regarding
cataloging traditions and established assumptions, and a desire to shape
evolving standards. Interest and potential to meet requirements for UNR
tenure and promotion. Preferred: Experience with database development.
Experience in an academic library. Indexing experience. Supervisory
experience.

Compensation: Salary competitive DOE. TIAA/CREF and other retirement
options; 24 vacation days per year; generous sick leave. No state income
tax or FICA. Tuition benefits for self and family.

Campus and Environment:

The University Libraries report to the Vice President for Information
Technology, who also serves as Dean of the University Libraries.  The
Libraries are a critical and valued component in an organizationally
unified campus information infrastructure, which includes Campus Computing
(academic computing), Campus Information Systems (administrative
computing), Network Communications, Teaching and Learning Technologies,
the Campus Webmaster, a National Public Radio affiliate, and the Office of
Process and Performance Planning. Librarians are expected to work with
colleagues across these increasingly artificial departmental boundaries.
Librarians hold the senior management positions in Network Communications
and Teaching and Learning Technologies.

The University of Nevada, Reno is the land grant university and major
research institution in the state with a student body of approximately
14,000. The University's main campus is in Reno, a metropolitan area of
334,000, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, minutes from
California and 35 miles from Lake Tahoe. Reno is a community noted for its
arts and festivals as well as outdoor recreational opportunities.
