Lynn, For a number of years, while a specific jobber had "guaranteed" that items they listed for us to purchase in their catalog were cleared for public library circulation, I have routinely written the producer/copyright holder for written permissions. In some cases, we have been told "absolutely not. These products are not to be loaned to the public." In other cases we get a nice note or license/contract-looking document back indicating we are OK loaning the CD-ROMs. Some places we do not ever hear from, and while I try over time to contact someone in the organization I do not always succeed. Legal workshops and copyright seminars I have attended over the years seem to be saying that this is a wise procedure, if time-consuming. I will be interested in reading other responses to the list.
