LIBRARIAN, ELECTRONIC ACQUISITIONS

The University of Pennsylvania Library has an excellent opportunity for
an entry-level librarian interested in gaining electronic resources
experience, and is seeking a qualified candidate for this new position.
Under the general supervision of the Electronic Acquisitions Librarian,
this position is involved in purchasing and maintaining the
accessibility of electronic resources. The Electronic Acquisitions
Department functions as an essential component of a redesigned and
renamed Information Processing Center. Housed in new state-of-the-art
quarters and using Endeavor's Voyager information system the IPC is
well-positioned for the future. We are looking for someone who works
well with ambiguity, flourishes in a very demanding environment, is
flexible and has a good sense of humor. The Electronic Acquisitions
Department maintains licenses and subscriptions to thousands of
electronic journals, and hundreds of databases and other information
resources, and is rapidly expanding. The Electronic Acquisitions
Librarian reports to Head, Electronic Acquisitions Department.

Broad Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Electronic Acquisitions Librarian, provide
all types of services for the access and maintenance of electronic
resources for all 15 of the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. Act
as, when needed, backup to the head of the department and to the other
Acquisitions Heads.

Duties:
In conjunction with the department head, support the broad range of
acquisitions services offered by the Goldstein Information Processing
Center. Review site pages for usability, acquire and ensure availability
of a wide range of electronic collection materials. Create bibliographic
and other metadata pertaining to these resources, including information
regarding the acquisition of digital information. Collaborate with
cataloging units to ensure public access and record maintenance. Analyze
and coordinate the development of projects and resources. May be
assigned liaison responsibilities to specific libraries. Generally
support the electronic acquisitions department.   May manage and
coordinate the Library's access to electronic government information
sources particularly those resources that have traditionally been part
of the government documents depository program. Serve as back-up to the
department head when necessary.

Qualifications:
Required: MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent in
skills and experience.

Highly desirable: Experience with spreadsheet and database technology
and software, such as Excel and MS Access; Flexibility in prioritizing
multiple projects; Ability to problem-solve; Propensity for details,
Ability to be trained in acquisitions in an online environment.

Preferred: Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills; Knowledge of
metadata developments and applications; Knowledge of integrated library
systems.
