ALCTS Automated Acquisitions Discussion Group

The ALCTS Automated Acquisitions Discussion Group will hold a session at
ALA that may be of interest:

The ALCTS Automated Acquisitions In-Process/Control Systems
Discussion Group invites you to a presentation of R2 Consulting's
recent research associated with the Library of Congress Project
on the Creation and Distribution of MARC Records in North
America.

In response to the report prepared last year by the LC Working Group on
the Future of Bibliographic Control
(http://www.loc.gov/bibliographic-future/news/lcwg-ontherecord-jan08-fin
al.pdf), the Library of Congress commissioned R2 Consulting, LLC to
research and describe the North American marketplace for cataloging
records, including existing incentives and barriers to both contribution
and availability. The scope of this project is broad, including data
gathered from all types of US and Canadian producers, distributors, and
consumers of MARC records. Ruth Fischer, of R2 Consulting will provide
an overview of their research and lead what we expect to be a lively
discussion. It should be understood that R2 will not be speaking for the
Library of Congress, but about their findings only. A description of the
project can be found at:
http://www.r2consulting.org/pdfs/LC%20Press%20Release.pdf

R2 has also established a website as a resource for the project:
http://bibrecords.ning.com/

We hope you'll join us on Sunday July 12th from 10:30-Noon in the
Chicago Hilton, Lake Ontario Room.
