Terry Cullen asked if freelance writers are giving up all rights to publishers. No, they are fighting hard not to, despite publishers' attempts at major rights grabs. Freelance writers traditionally sell North American first-time print rights only to newspapers and magazines, and retain all other rights themselves. Publishers (starting with the august New York Times, one of the worst offenders) are now trying to get (for the same low fee) all rights in perpetuity in the universe, including rights not yet conceived.
