I am invloved (a member of the editorial board) of a new peer-reviewed, electronic only, startup journal in Chemistry - the Internet Journal of Chemistry (IJC) - www.ijc.com. As we approach the end of our first year of operation I can say without question that the cost for year one, including buying a dedicated computer, etc, is less tha $50,000. We have 2500 registered users (the journal will be free for years 1 and 2) so far, and if we convert only a small percentage of these to paying customers starting in Janaury 2000, I am sure the journal will profitable at a very reasonable cost (i.e., less than $300).
