SURVEY 7/17/98 Cambridge University Press is developing a new edition of a statistical database which has previously been made available only on CD-ROM. In order to determine the requirements and platform preferences (particularly those of Internet access vs. CD-ROM networks) of the library community we conducted a survey at the recent ALA meeting in Washington. The results indicated a 60 / 40 split narrowly in favor of Internet access to statistical databases. We wanted to extend the survey to an even greater segment of the library community, and have received permission from the liblicense list to post our survey. Please fill out the form if you have the time, and any feedback on the questions below is welcome. Replies can be emailed directly to agabriel@cup.org and / or posted to the list. _____________________________________________________ [PLEASE CHECK ["X"] THE APPROPRIATE ANSWER TO EACH QUESTION, AND ADD ANY QUALIFYING COMMENTS AS NECESSARY] 1) What kind of library do you work for: ___ Middle / High school ___ 2-year college ___ 4-year college (undergraduate only) ___ university (with professional schools) ___ public library ___ corporate library other: 2) Annual acquisitions budget (books and other non-journal items) for your library: ___ $ 50,000 or less ___ $100,000 ___ $250,000 ___ $500,000 ___ $1 million or more 3) Annual expenditures on electronic services or products by your library: ___ less than $1000 ___ $1000 - $5000 ___ $5000 - $10,000 ___ $10,000 - $30,000 ___ $30,000 - $100,000 more: 4) Does your library subscribe to electronic journals over the World WideWeb or the Internet? ___ yes ___ no If yes, how many? ___ 5 or fewer ___ 5 to 10 ___ 10 to 25 more: 5) Does your library subscribe to internet databases, such as First Search or Lexis-Nexis? ___ yes ___ no If yes, how many? ___ 5 or fewer ___ 5 to 10 ___ 10 to 25 more: 6) Would you characterize most internet databases as.... ___ easy for you and your clients to use or ___ difficult for you and your clients to use 7) What problems do you frequently encounter with internet databases?
