Fair Use - A Value in the Digital Age?
Saturday
June 27, 1998
2:00 - 4:00 PM
Grand Hyatt - Constitution Room
The exclusive right to intellectual property enjoyed by
copyright holders is limited by the United States
Constitution. Fair Use provisions in the copyright law of
the United States guarantee to libraries and educational
institutions the right to make accessible for use
material otherwise restricted by copyright. The
emergence of the digital environment for publishing and
communicating has brought with it a renewed effort by
copyright holders to eliminate Fair Use protections
enjoyed by libraries and educational institutions.
A prominent panel of experts will review the doctrine of
Fair Use. The latest developments in legislative activities
and their implications for access to information will be addressed.
The impact of advances in technology on copyright protections and
fair use will be considered. And practical issues relating to
the value and relevance of Fair Use in consortial relationships
will be examined.
