RE: Social Security Numbers and User Authentication

Our libraries have been forced into using the SSN in the absence of any
other user id number.  We reassure the user that only their number is
required; by not requiring a name as well only the number can be
intercepted, and it would be difficult to associate it with a name.  In
addition, where the interface permits, we hide the number as it is keyed
in.
