Re: Copyright in Bibliographic records?
Just to note that regardless of the copyrightability of the underlying data, there can be a copyright in the compilation. So that in the case of a bibliographic utility, it could protect its database from being duplicated regardless of the copyrightability of the individual components. As an aside, after the recent WIPO Conference at which a proposed treaty protecting databases was tabled, a Recommendation Concerning Databases was issued ( http://www.loc.gov/copyright/100dc.html ) that will certainly affect libraries as both licensors and licensees. It proposes an extraordinary session during the first quarter of 1997 to draft a schedule for continuing work on a Database Treaty. - Jonathan Franklin
