For older publishers, especially literary publishers, the essential resource is the FOB (Firms out of Business) database. FOB tracks publishing, literary and other firms that have gone out of business, and is jointly run by the Harry Ransom Center and University of Reading Library. And thanks to Steve and Gail who sent along the resource from Mary Munroe (http://www.ulib.niu.edu/publishers/). That seems like a great place to start, at least. And yes, Joe, you guessed it!
