Reporting to the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, this individual leads the collection development and scholarly communications activities at the University of Miami Libraries using a panoramic vision of the possibilities for research, scholarly communication, and collection development in this dynamic time of change. *THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Miami is one of the nation's leading research universities in a community of extraordinary diversity and international vitality. The University is privately supported, non-sectarian institution, located in Coral Gables, Florida, on a 260-acre subtropical campus. The University comprises 11 degree granting schools and colleges, including Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Communication, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Music, Nursing, and Marine and Atmospheric Science (www.miami.edu). * * *THE LIBRARY: The University of Miami Libraries (www.library.miami.edu) ranks among the top 50 research libraries in North America with a combined collection of approximately 3 million volumes, 45,000 current serials, and over 29,000 E-journal titles. The Otto G. Richter Library lies in the heart of the campus and serves as the central library for the University. Other University of Miami libraries include the Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business Information Resource Center, and the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library, and the Louis Calder Memorial Library. The campus also has an independent Law library. The Libraries provide support and services for approx. 10,100 undergraduates, 5,100 graduate students, and 10,000 full and part time faculty and staff. The Libraries has a staff of 37 Librarians and 86 support staff and is a member of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, NERL, OCLC, and SOLINET. For more information regarding the Libraries collections, visit http://www.library.miami.edu/research/collections/library_collections.html. *POSITION: Reporting to the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, the Director of Collections and Scholarly Communication is responsible for policy creation and the enhancement, evaluation, promotion, and management of all print, electronic and media information resources. The Director will negotiate major vendor licenses for electronic resources and effectively administer a collections budget that has grown steadily in recent years. Critical management talents include leadership for developing university library collections, in-depth collection analysis skill, preservation acumen, and a facility for cross-departmental communication. The ideal candidate will use creative vision and talent for outreach to lead scholarly communication and digital publishing efforts while reporting on trends and issues to the library and the University community. The successful candidate will work to become an integral member of the University of Miami community, to ensure that the Libraries' information resources support the teaching, learning and research needs of the University and align with the University's strategic directions. This person will originate new models of collection development and preservation with respect to both the Libraries' general and Special Collections. The Director's aptitude for outreach will benefit the Libraries in advancing donor relations, promoting fund-raising efforts, and providing direction for future donor collections and gifts. *QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from an ALA accredited program or its foreign equivalent, or a Ph.D. with appropriate library experience; a second masters or other advanced degree highly desirable, five years experience in an academic or research library with responsibilities in the areas of collection development or senior library management; experience with copyright and intellectual rights management and a thorough understanding of academic publishing issues and trends in scholarly communications; demonstrated record of leadership and effective engagement with faculty, strong intellectual curiosity, creativity, and initiative; substantial knowledge of the historical and current trends and practices in scholarly publishing in a variety of academic disciplines and experience and/or knowledge of current digital collection management practices; management and budgetary experience, including budget preparation, allocation, projection, and analysis; strong organizational, analytical, and oral and written communication skills; evidence of ability to effectively mentor professionals and facilitate the work of others and a record of professional contributions. *SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications of the person selected. This is a non-tenure track twelve-month appointment at the Associate, or Professor rank.
