AIBS & UC Press Announce Partnership to Publish BioScience

Berkeley, California - University of California Press Journals +
Digital Publishing is proud to announce that the American
Institute for Biological Sciences (AIBS), the leading broad-based
US biological research, education, and advocacy organization, has
selected UC Press as its new publishing partner for its flagship
journal, BioScience. Dedicated to advancing biological research
and education for the welfare of society, The AIBS federation
boasts a membership of over 5,000 biologists and 200 professional
societies and scientific organizations; the combined individual
membership of the latter exceeds 250,000. In expanding the reach
and visibility of BioScience, UC Press is proud to further the
public service mission of AIBS itself.

In addition, UC Press is pleased to work collaboratively with
BioOne to assure broad access for libraries to the online version
of BioScience. The journal will continue to be available via the
BioOne.1 collection, a full-text online package of essential
biological science research journals. BioScience will also be
made available for purchase as a stand-alone journal through UC
Press and its online hosting platform, Caliber, beginning with
Volume 59, Issue 1 in January 2009.

Since 1964, BioScience has presented readers with timely and
authoritative overviews of current research in biology,
accompanied by essays and discussion sections on education,
public policy, history, and the conceptual underpinnings of the
biological sciences. A peer-reviewed, heavily cited journal -
reflected in its impact factor of 4.083 and rank of 8/70 in
Biology, according to the 2007 Journal Citation Reports -
BioScience publishes a range of content crucial for broad-based
understanding of the field, including:

- overview articles describing new research findings and
techniques;

- accounts of advances in biology education;

- professionally written feature articles about the latest
frontiers in biology;

- discussions of professional issues;

- book reviews;

- news about AIBS;

- Washington Watch - a policy column;

- Eye on Education - an education column;

- Special Sections and series that address selected topics in
depth.

The journal is edited by Tim Beardsley and is written and edited
for accessibility to researchers, educators, and students alike.

"AIBS is delighted to be a part of this innovative collaboration
among nonprofit organizations that will allow AIBS to publish
BioScience with the expertise, resources, and world-wide reach
that UC Press and BioOne each bring to the table. Our mutual
goal is the broadest possible dissemination and accessibility of
BioScience content in a sustainable manner. We look forward to
the success of this venture." -Richard O'Grady, Executive
Director, AIBS

"AIBS is a founding organization of BioOne, and produces one of
the collection's stellar journals. The fact that UC Press is able
and willing to accommodate the needs of both organizations will
enhance our joint commitment to provide concrete benefits for the
entire community of bioscience students and researchers."
   - Susan Skomal Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, BioOne

"UC Press is proud to be working with both AIBS and BioOne to
enable a broad range of access to BioScience" says Rebecca Simon,
Associate Director, University of California Press and Director
of the Journals + Digital Publishing Division. "Such
collaborations between non-profit, mission-driven organizations
help assure not only affordable access for libraries but
sustainable models for the scholarly publishing community."
