There is a brilliant and incisive post on Tim O'Reilly's blog (brought to my attention by Peter Brantley) on the linkage between offline and online marketing activities. You can find it here:

Although O'Reilly discusses the book business, with an unexpected paean to Barnes & Noble, his argument can realistically be extended to the Toll Access vs. Open Access debate over how exactly interest is generated in particular articles and books. But see the piece; it's very good regardless of whether you make the leap with me.
