Ithaka (www.ithaka.org, with mission to accelerate productive use of IT for higher education) has released a new report on university publishing in a digital age (http://www.ithaka.org/strategic-services/university-publishing/) -- downloadable PDF available there. The report is based on interviews with numerous stakeholders from within Universities (some Georgetown leaders, including myself, were interviewed). For reportage and comment, see both the Chronicle of Higher Education (probably for subscribers only: http://chronicle.com/daily/2007/07/2007072601n.htm -- quoting inter alia Paul Courant and Carol Mandel) and Inside Higher Education (http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2007/07/26/ithaka -- also quoting Courant, but Sandy Thatcher and others as well). The main theme is the argument that Universities underattend to their publishing mission and opportunity, with risks for their presses but for their research and teaching missions as well in a time of transformation.
