* INDUSTRY SUPPORT FOR ACADEMIC RESEARCH in science and
engineering fell for the third straight year in the 2004
fiscal year, according to a new report from the National
    Science Foundation. Overall research-and-development spending
at colleges increased by 7.2 percent, which represents a
slowdown from double-digit growth in the previous two years.

The report, "Industrial Funding of Academic R&D Continues to
Decline in FY 2004,"
http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/infbrief/nsf06315/ uses data from
the National Science Foundation Survey of Research and
Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges to analyze
sources for money for research at colleges, the fields that are
the top recipients of research dollars, and the institutions that
receive the most research money. Figures from 2004 are the most
recent reported to the agency.

According to the survey, industry's support of academic research
in science and engineering fell by 2.6 percent in 2004, after
declining by 1.1 percent in 2003 and 1.5 percent in 2002.
Industry support was $2.1-billion in 2004, down from a high of
$2.2-billion in 2001.
