Tony's taking a well-deserved holiday vacation, so let me step in. Elsevier has been in discussion with LOCKSS, and we have been evaluating together whether and how the ScienceDirect system technically could work with the LOCKSS system. It has never been a question of exclusivity, e.g. LOCKSS versus the National Library in the Netherlands (which has been archiving Elsevier journals for several years) or, now, LOCKSS versus Portico. A variety of systems that work well for libraries and publishers should be encouraged. What is critical is that all publishers and all libraries support trusted archival partners in building robust networks for digital preservation. I just checked the list of publisher partners and I don't see Elsevier listed. Any comments Tony? Shirley Rais, Chair, Serials Dept. The financial details are confidential, for reasons I'm sure you will understand. The agreement with Portico is in parallel to our agreement with the Royal Dutch Library. It has been an important part of our archiving strategy to maximise relience and part of this is achieved by having parallel strategies in place. We also, of course, have very thorough internal archiving and back-up procedures in place. Tony Tony McSean Director of Library Relations Elsevier +44 7795 960516 +44 20 7611 4413
