The ROI of Discoverability: If They Can't Find It, They Won't Use It and
Can't Buy It

There is no point creating content if nobody can find it. The speakers at
this seminar share the tricks of the trade in creating, sharing, and
discovering information online.

Discoverability has a very different connotation, depending on whether
you're talking about the majority of the content you find on the Internet,
or professional and scholarly content (the so-called "invisible" web).
What does "discoverable" mean when you're talking about professional and
scholarly content? What happens behind the scenes when Google or Yahoo
searches for scholarly or scientific content? What do they do with full
text and with metadata? The phrase "search engine optimization" is a
common term in the commercial world of content. What are the principles
that are usable for SSP content?

Discoverable information on the Internet also attracts advertisers, and we
will hear from an experienced advertising sales representative who can
tell us what will attract reputable advertising online.

Embracing Technology and Process Changes to Successfully Transform a
Scholarly Publisher

Moving to an all-XML workflow, or investing in expensive content
management software, may transform your organization's efficiency.

However, understanding how to balance the significant gains associated
with new technology with real human and financial costs linked with
widespread change is often daunting to publishers. This seminar will
explore a variety of book and journal technologies, the challenges some
publishers have faced when implementing them, how they overcame them, the
process changes that worked, and where the industry is headed next from a
technology perspective.

.Experts will help you determine where XML fits into your workflow.
.Learn more about Google Print - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Will it
 affect your business?
.Explore approaches to content management taken by small society
publishers and large organizations including Oxford University
 Press, Elsevier, and Wolters Kluwer.

Don't forget SSP's Washington seminars: Institutional Repositories:
Opportunity or Threat? (November 7) and Copyright: Developments at the
Core of Your Business (November 8). More information is now on the SSP
website.
