Institutional Repositories: Opportunity or Threat?

Institutional Repositories (IRs) are becoming a major focus of educational
institutions in the UK and Europe as some higher education authorities are
mandating that faculty deposit their publications. In the United States
the IR movement is also gathering strength with many major research
libraries developing major collections of unpublished and published
materials--often available freely outside as well as inside their
institutions. Can publishers co-exist with IRs? Perhaps we can even
benefit from them? In this seminar, speakers introduce Institutional
Repositories, describe the technology behind them, and look at the
business impact they are only just starting to make. Topics include:

* Technology and software: Who is building them and why?

* A not for profit publisher dilemma: How to work within IRs but not
compromise quality?

* How do IRs impact commercial publishers: Opportunity or threat?

Current Topics in Copyright

Copyright is at the heart of the publishing process, but the principles
underlying the concept are being challenged daily by the realities of
electronic distribution. Speakers at this day-long seminar will consider
current trends, and attempt to look to the future. The morning explores
broader perspectives on the effect of the Open Access movement and current
Congressional and Senate debates on intellectual property. The afternoon
gets down to more specific issues: what constitutes fair use in the
Interlibrary Loan of electronic materials? How can rights be effectively
managed in the "leaky" information environment publishers are now faced
with? Topics covered in the seminar include:

* Researcher rights and the author's copyright transfer.

* Future government objectives and initiatives related to copyright.

* Tracking usage and the resolution of multiple versions.

Don't forget SSP's Philadelphia seminars: The ROI of Discoverability, and
Embracing Technology and Process.

These are also on November 7-8, and more information is now on the SSP
website.
