Web Designer/Database Developer, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, NY. Description: The Archives of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking a candidate for a grant-funded position in the Archives. Applicants must be creative, flexible and innovative, with knowledge of current digital protocols and standards as well as familiarity with web development tools and design. This is a key position in the implementation of a grant "Preserving the Past and Present, Looking to the Future: Digitizing the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Archive" from the Macy Foundation. The project involves organizing and digitizing the papers of notable scientists and other materials that document the Laboratory's position in the forefront of scientific research and developing a web site that will make these resources available to scholars and historians. The project will encompass many different forms of documents, consisting of rare books, manuscripts, records, and reprints and off prints, photographs, personal correspondence and interviews and audio and videot! apes and DVDs. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory <http://www.cshl.edu/> is a world-renowned research and educational institution located on the north shore of Long Island, about 45 miles from New York City. The Archives, located in the Carnegie Building along with the Library, both under the Directorship of Mila Pollock, was created in 1972 to house the growing collection of research and historical materials, consisting of a rich repository of rare books, manuscripts, photographs and scientific reprints. Responsibilities and duties: * Role encompasses design, development, maintenance, and consulting for web site * Develops metadata * Designs and develops web site * Researches, composes and edits narrative writing * Reports to the Director of Libraries and Archives Qualifications and requirements : * MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent, or graduate degree in computer science. * Demonstrated creativity and experience in designing, developing and maintaining web pages * Knowledge and/or expertise of any of the following web programming tools and software: HTML, Flash, XML coding, Javascript, Perl, Active Server Pages, Dreamweaver, Cumulus, Adobe Photoshop, Access * Experience in Unix/Linux environment * Demonstrated research skills. * Advanced computing skills including self-directed learning skills and the ability to rapidly master new technology and software. * Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills * Ability to work independently and in teams Salary: Salary is negotiable, dependent on qualifications and experience. Salary minimum: $50,000.
