Archivist of Special Collection Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a world-renowned research and educational institution located on the north shore of Long Island, about 45 miles from New York City. The Archives, located in the Carnegie Building along with the Library, both under the Directorship of Mila Pollock, was created in 1972 to house the growing collection of research and historical materials, consisting of a rich repository of rare books, manuscripts, photographs and scientific reprints. Description: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory seeks an enthusiastic candidate to fill the position of the Archivist of the Special JD Watson Collection. The position involves working primarily with the extensive and rapidly expanding collection of scientific and personal materials of CSHL Chancellor, Nobelist James Watson (formerly CSHL Director 1968-94 and CSHL President 1994-2003. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with career aspirations in archives to work on a collection of singular historic and research value. The collection is physically organized, although new materials continue to be received. Responsibilities and Duties: The Archivist of Special JD Watson Collection provides leadership in the implementation, assessment and creation of the CSHL special collections and in new and ongoing digital library/archives projects and programs. 1. Manages photo digital collections and assists outside users and patrons with their requests for digital photos. 2. Describes and prepares finding aids for archives and special collections; encodes finding aids and digital primary sources in EAD (Encoded Archival Description). 3. Creates standards for archiving and disseminating digital images. 4. Participates in development of archival projects, i.e. exhibits, conferences, etc. 5. Works with the JD Watson web site, <http://library.cshl.edu/nationaldna/index.html> 6. Provides assistance to scientific staff, scholars, students and other patrons and visitors to the J.D. Watson collection. 7. Creates and maintains in-house research databases for archival materials. Qualifications: Graduate-level archival course work, certification or MLS from an ALA accredited library institution is required. One year of professional experience in an archival setting; processing and referencing of archival/manuscript collection management and interpretation is also required. A strong background and knowledge of computer systems (PC or Mac, and software programs (PowerPoint, Adobe PhotoShop) and a strong knowledge of EAD and experience using EAD metadata are a necessity. The candidate should also have the ability to establish goals and priorities and to work both independently and cooperatively with other archivists and librarians on the staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills are needed. This position will report to the Director of Libraries and Archives. Salary: Salary is negotiable, dependant on qualifications and experience.
