Dear Colleagues, Since Open Access is a common thread on this list, I thought some of you might be interested in the following conference: 2nd Digital Archives for Science & Engineering Resources Summit DASER-2: 29 April 1 May 2005 University of Maryland, Adelphi, Maryland, USA The American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIST) is pleased to present the Second Digital Archives for Science & Engineering Resources Summit (DASER-2: pronounced like "laser" except with a "d"), to be held Friday evening, 29 April 2005, through Sunday afternoon, 1 May, at the Inn & Conference Center of the University College of the University of Maryland, Adelphi, Maryland. Building on the success of the first DASER Summit, which took place in November 2003 at MIT, DASER-2 will examine new issues and challenges related to digital archives and Science-Technology-Medicine (STM) publishing. This conference will explore issues surrounding digital libraries, institutional repositories and open access publishing, such as: - Impact of OA on the future of STM libraries; - Institutional repository models: what works and what doesn't; - Publisher-library collaboration strategies, now and in the near future; - Institutional repository object issues--theses, datasets, learning objects, etc.; - User needs and patterns related to digital libraries. If you attend, you will hear about projects from academia, non-profit organizations, the commercial sector, and government initiatives, both in the United States and abroad. In addition to our key note speaker, Jan Velterop of BioMed Central, other confirmed speakers include: Jerry Cowhig, Institute of Physics Publishing Karla Hahn, University of Maryland Leslie Johnston, University of Virginia Robert Kelly, American Physical Society Michael Leach, President-Elect, ASIST David Osterbur, Harvard University Vivian Siegel, Public Library of Science David Stern, Yale University Peiling Wang, University of Tennessee This conference will offer participants a number of unique features. Break-out sessions will be offered after each panel, where participants will have the choice of visiting one or another speaker in a more informal atmosphereto ask further questions, discuss collaborations, share anecdotes, and to develop strategies with their fellow participants. There are no parallel sessions so you will be able to hear each speaker. In addition, we will have a number of participants who will be blogging during the conference. This information should supplement your own notes and provide further perspectives on the conference. Dinner Friday evening, when our key-note presentation will occur, and a Saturday luncheon are included in the registration. The area is accessible from three airports: Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), Reagan National Airport (DCA), and Dulles International (IAD). Public transportation is also available.
