http://www.arl.org/training/licensing.html0 Licensing Review and Negotiation Course Dates This course is offered three times in 2005: April 4-May 6, 2005 July 11-August 12, 2005 September 19-October 21, 2005 Registration Information Cost: $500 ARL members / $575 nonmembers Deadline: Registration closes ten days prior to the course's start date. All online workshops are capped at 30 participants. Register Online Course Description This Online Lyceum course was created in 2002 in response to the ongoing demand for an introductory course that covers the basics of licensing electronic information products for libraries. The course content designers and facilitators are the same expert faculty who conducted this popular workshop in person for over five years, and the course content is continuously updated to reflect current licensing issues. In this course you will: o Gain an understanding of the U.S. legal environment that affects the licensing of electronic information products. o Explore the roles and needs of the various licensing stakeholders, from user to library to licensor. o Become familiar with typical electronic product license terms and conditions and what they really mean. o Learn to reduce risk for your institution, library, users, and yourself during the license review and negotiation process. o Learn how to make the license negotiation go smoothly. o Develop a toolkit of materials to bring to your real-world licensing work. This Online Lyceum course incorporates elements of both synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous interaction with course facilitators and a global peer network of up to 30 learners via a course bulletin board, chat rooms, and regular e-mail. This course also includes interaction with course facilitators via the submission of assignments which will be reviewed and returned with feedback. Visit the course homepage for a full introduction, course schedule, and Quick Tour. Target Audience Librarians and other institutional staff who are relatively new to the process of reviewing and negotiating licenses for electronic resources on behalf of the library, the institution as a whole, or a consortium. Staff who are involved in all aspects of license review and negotiation will benefit from this course, including: o Acquisitions and electronic resource librarians with responsibility for reviewing and negotiating licenses for the library o Bibliographers, subject specialists, and others responsible for recommending electronic resources o Information technology staff responsible for determining, implementing, and supporting the technical requirements for electronic resources o Staff responsible for reviewing and signing licenses for electronic library resources in the legal counsel's office Instructors/Course Creators o Becky Albitz, Electronic Resources and Copyright Librarian, Pennsylvania State University (course instructor) o Angee Baker-McAfee, President, the McAfee Group (course creator) o Trisha Davis, Head, Serials and Electronic Resources Department, The Ohio State University Libraries (instructor and course creator) o Karen Hersey, Senior Counsel for Intellectual Property, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Retired) (course creator) Time Commitment A participant should plan to dedicate between 25 and 35 hours to this course over the full five-week period. This will allow enough time to review the course content and readings, participate in online asynchronous discussion, attend weekly chat office hours, and complete course activities and assignments. Mark Your Calendar! The April 4-May 6, 2005 course is still in the process of scheduling weekly office hours. Since we understand that not everyone may be able to make all the chat sessions, these are an optional part of the Online Lyceum courses. Chat sessions are recorded and copies of the transcripts are provided on the discussion board, where the conversation can continue. Certificates of Completion & CEUs Certificates of Completion will be issued to those participants who submit all course assignments and a final online course evaluation form. Certificates will be mailed to participants within one month of completing their course. Eight (8) MLA continuing education contact hours are awarded upon the successful completion of this course.
