Interesting comments from all on this thread so far. I would like to reiterate, as Stevan Harnad has, that Open Access through institutional repositories does not mean the end of library subscriptions. Partial OA within journals (author charges for specific articles) does not end the need for subscriptions. Just because a society or association experiments with OA in its various guises, whether that be free content to backfiles or individual articles, for example, the "threat" to subscriptions isn't the point, and may well be negligible.
