Scholarly Communications 101

Receive an overview to the scholarly communications landscape from the
ACRL preconference "Scholarly Communications 101."  This full-day
preconference, offered by the ACRL Scholarly Communications Committee,
will be held prior to the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando on Friday, June
25, 2004.  Become fluent with scholarly communications issues and trends
and position yourself to participate in campus communications programs and
other advocacy efforts.  Preconference topics will include:

The developing crisis in the system of scholarly communication: -Trends
related to scholarly journals, including pricing, declines in library
subscriptions, and related access issues -Licensing -- threats to access,
economic issues -Increasing corporate control of journal publishing,
including industry consolidation and anti-trust issues -Trends related to
monographs, including declines in collecting levels, economic pressures on
university presses, declines in monographic publishing -National policy
issues related to copyright issues -- threats to fair use and the public
domain

Strategies for change:
-Antimerger activity
-Editorial board control
-Declaring independence
-Electronic publication
-Open access journals
-Open access repositories
-Licensing strategies
-Legislative and policy advocacy

Recent scholarly communications developments

Actions for faculty and librarians

Featured presenters include Dwayne K. Buttler, Associate Professor,
University of Louisville; Ray English, Director of Libraries, Oberlin
College; James Neal, Vice President for Information Services and
University Librarian, Columbia University; Lee Van Orsdel, Dean of
Libraries, Eastern Kentucky University; and Karen Williams, Team Leader,
University of Arizona.
