This morning at the National Press Club, 49 scientific society publishers issued a statement called the "DC Principles for Free Access to science." The statement reaffirms the commitment of these publishers to the widest possible dissemination of scientific research, under a variety of business models. The statement asserts that the costs of publishing should not be borne solely by authors and their institutions (a somewhat different approach to that articulated by many Open Access advocates). See a description and the Statement, which is now available at the web site of the American Society of Plant Biologists: <http://www.aspb.org/publications/dcprinciples.cfm#media> No doubt reports of the actual press conference will appear shortly.
