Dean of Libraries The University of Kentucky invites both nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Libraries. The candidate should have the desire, ability, and vision to lead the library system within an institution that aspires to become one of the nation's premier public research universities. The University of Kentucky is the state's comprehensive, public, land grant university with a faculty of 1,800 and an enrollment of 24,000 including 5,000 graduate and professional students in 19 colleges and schools. The Dean of Libraries oversees a library system which serves the entire University. * The Dean of Libraries leads a staff of 91 librarians and administrative staff and 94 support staff. The Dean oversees a budget of $18,500,000. * The University's library holdings include 2.9 million books, 5.8 million microforms, and 1.4 million government documents. * The primary facility of the University's sixteen libraries, including the Chandler Medical Center Libraries and the Alvin E. Evans Law Library, is the state-of-the-art William T. Young Library, completed in 1998, which contains 361,000 square feet and 2.1 million volumes. * The library system is the beneficiary of a $65,000,000 book endowment, including receipts and pledges - one of the largest endowments of its kind at a major research institution. The Dean of Libraries is expected to provide strong intellectual leadership for the University library, promote excellence among its faculty, and oversee its educational and service programs. The Dean of Libraries reports directly to the Provost. It is anticipated that the Dean of Libraries will be named to a newly created endowed chair. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. It is expected that the Dean of Libraries will be an individual who has a record of research and academic achievement, is a strong and creative leader, has excellent organizational, communication, human resources and interpersonal skills, has a deep understanding of today's technology-driven information environment, is successful at development and donor-relations, has a profound commitment to service, and has a collegial and understanding attitude toward the needs of students, staff, and faculty in a large research university setting. Prior experience at another ARL institution is preferred. A Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution is required. In addition, a doctoral degree in any appropriate field is preferred. Review of completed applications will begin October 1, 2002 and will continue until the position is filled.
