In connection with the discussion of statewide database deals, readers of this list might be interested to check out the new factual (non-bibliographic) databases from Academic Press's SciVision Division, e.g. OncoIS (IS = Information System), a database of classified and systematized information on studies of somatic mutations of human cancers; ToxSys - a database on the toxicological effects of over a quarter million compounds or mixtures; and others on the properties of glasses and polymers (coming). See http://www.scivision.com. These 'knowledge bases' don't just point to information, they actually show it, and can literally save researchers weeks of work. They are offered as online licenses or as CD-ROM subscriptions on a concurrent user basis to institutions large and small, including statewide and other consortia. A major strategic goal of Academic Press is to publish high quality informational products and services to complement its books and journals. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Ken Metzner, PhD, VP Electronic Publishing Platforms Harcourt Worldwide STM Group (Academic P, WBSaunders, Mosby, Churchill-Livingstone) 625 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106 tel 215-238-7830, fax 215-238-7883, cell 610-496-3900 kmetzner@harcourt.com, http://www.idealibrary.com -----------------------------------------------------------------
