U of Maryland Holds Fair Use Seminar

Future of Fair Use Seminar- June 15th, 2001

The Center for Intellectual Property is hosting a one-day face to face
seminar on June 15, 2001 on the Future of Fair Use. Many wonder whether
there is a need for Fair Use in the digital age, or if a Fair Use should
also be a free use. This one-day seminar will explore the role of Fair Use
in the new Information Society where new technologies make digital rights
management possible and may impact whether Fair Use continues to exist.

This one-day seminar will provide an in-depth discussion of the copyright
legal framework and the role of Fair Use in a digitally-based society.
Break-out sessions are included to give participants the opportunity to
discuss the application of case law and statutory provisions to particular
factual scenarios. The seminar will conclude with a panel discussion on
the merits of the fair use doctrine and its proper application in the
digital environment.

The presenters for the seminar are Kimberly B. Kelley Associate Provost
and Executive Director of the Center for Intellectual Property and
Copyright in the Digital Environment, University of Maryland University
College, and Rodney J. Petersen, Director, Policy and Planning and Project
NEThics, Office of Information Technology, University of Maryland, College
Park.
