OCLC Copyright

As Paul Gherman pointed out OCLC copyrighted the database to protect the
interest and investment of members. At the time of the copyright there
were many companies and organizations who wanted to commercially publish
large portions of the database or use it for other purposes. Members and
networks have their portions of the databases for many purposes which fit
the collaborative effort in creating and maintaining the databsase. The
database represents the work of its members and, over the years, has been
enriched and enhanced by its members.
