So are you REALLY saying that the only reason Mendel's work was 
not lost was because some library somewhere collected it? 
Seriously?? Library collections historically have changed how and 
by whom they are developed and managed. Finding the right mix of 
patron driven, selector chosen, pay per view to support the 
constituents of your library is exactly what libraries have 
always done, the only difference is the technology.  One should 
envy the researchers in Austin in the coming years, decades, and 
generations because they have a library that is responsive to 
their needs and librarians that are willing to move beyond 
entrenched comfort levels and take some well thought out 
strategic risks.

The Mendel instance is a classic one, but others of such a sort,
less spectacular, albeit significantly, are legion. One is not
inclined to envy researchers located in Austin in the coming
years, decades and generations
