AUGUST WEBINAR: E-BOOKS: A RAPIDLY EVOLVING MARKETPLACE

NISO's August webinar will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009
from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) on the topic of E-Books: A
Rapidly Evolving Marketplace.

While e-books have been slow to garner wide adoption, the past
few years has seen greatly expanded interest and use of e-books.
New models and applications are growing exponentially. This
webinar will explore several key aspects of the e-book community:
sales and licensing models for libraries, and developments with
e-book file formats. Building on the free NISO/BISG forum
(http://www.niso.org/news/events/2009/ala09/bisg) held at the
American Library Association Annual Meeting in Chicago, this
webinar will focus on the business applications of creating,
selling, and using e-books.

Topics and speakers are:

-- Creation, Formatting, and Distribution Options for E-books
(Tino Fleischer, Atypon Systems, Inc.)

-- Business Models and Approaches for Selling E-books (Anne
Orens, Independent Consultant)

-- Library Purchasing and Use of E-books (Speaker TBA)

For more information and to register, visit the event webpage

available. Can't make it on the 12th? Register and gain access to

SEPTEMBER TWO-PART WEBINAR: E-RESOURCES LICENSING: THE GOOD, THE
BAD, THE UGLY

NISO's September webinar will be in two-parts. Part I will be
held on Wednesday, September 9 and Part II on Wednesday,
September 16; both from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time). You need
to register separately for each part and you may choose to
register for only one part.

Not every librarian is a lawyer, but many have to have an
in-depth understanding of legal issues to succeed in their jobs.
Licensing, contract, and copyright law all have significant
impacts on our community.

PART I of the webinar will provide an overview of the parts of
copyright law with which librarians have historically been
concerned and how the introduction of license agreements moved
the library/publisher relationship more deeply into the realm of
contract law. Participants will learn about basic legal
terminology common to most licenses and about some distinctions
and exceptions directly tied to the licensing of content.

PART II of the webinar will include an exploration of terms that
may be of concern to libraries and solutions for mitigating
problematic language. In addition, there will be an update on the
NISO Shared E-Resource Understanding (SERU) recommended practice
and the impact it is having in the community, including examples
of how both libraries and publishers are integrating SERU into
their workflows.

Judy Luther, President of Informed Strategies, and Seiden
Lamoureux, Electronic Resources Librarian at North Carolina State
University Libraries were just awarded the Coutts Award for
Innovation in Electronic Resources Management by the Collection
Management and Development Section (CMDS) of the Association for
Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) for leading the
development of SERU. The award recognizes significant and
innovative contributions to electronic collections management and
development practice.

Speakers for both parts of the Licensing webinars will be:

-- Trisha L. Davis, Associate Professor, Rights Management
Coordinator, and Head, Serials & E-Resources Department, The Ohio
State University Libraries

-- Selden Lamoureux, Electronic Resources Librarian, North
Carolina State University Libraries
