Re: COUNTER: current status and advice to users]

Circulation data for print volumes is crucial to both facility
and collection management.

Institutions are determining that the most effective use of
central campus space and dollars is to purposes other than
housing increasing print library collections. Circulation (i.e.
documented low use) is *one* factor in identifying titles best
housed "off site," leaving high use titles on the finite-capacity
library shelves. High circulation and inhouse use measurements
also signal candidates for purchase of additional copies and/or
online access (where available), and even candidates for library
preservation when a title is out of print.
