Programme details

10.30: Registration and coffee

11.00: Welcome and introduction to conference
Chair: Martin Richardson, Managing Director, Oxford Journals,
   Oxford University Press

11.20: Oxford Journals and Open Access
Claire Saxby, Editor, Oxford Journals, Oxford University Press

Reviewing the results from Oxford's open access experiments
   (Oxford Open), including:

* Uptake of the open access option available for 48 of the
   journals published by Oxford
* Nucleic Acids Research (fully open access since 2005),
including results from the latest NAR author and reader survey
   conducted March/April 2006.

12.00: Counting on Open Access - Preliminary Outcomes of an
Experiment in Evaluating Scholarly Journal Open Access Models
Eric Davies, Director, LISU, Loughborough University, and
Claire Creaser, Deputy Director & Senior Statistician, LISU,
   Loughborough University

Reporting the results of the first stage of a research study to
compare usage and citation patterns for three well-established
journals published in 2005 under different open access (OA)
   models.

The journals included in this study were Nucleic Acids Research=20
(NAR), Journal of Experimental Botany (JXB), and Bioinformatics.

13.00: Lunch

14.00: Determining the impact of open access publishing on use
and users David Nicholas, Managing Director, CIBER, University
College London, and Paul Huntington, Senior Research Fellow,
   CIBER, University College London

Reporting on research to determine whether the open access
('author pays') model of publishing leads to more 'hits' and
reaches the kinds of people the model aspires to reach. A
secondary purpose was to develop a powerful methodology, deep
log analysis, by which would accurately establish this.

The subject of the study was Nucleic Acids Research (NAR), which=20
moved to a full open access model in 2005. Initial research=20
showed that, indeed, there had been a very spectacular increase=20
in use in NAR over the last few years but that this can be=20
attributed to a whole range of factors of which OA is just one.=20
Recent work has concentrated on establishing the relative impacts=20
of these factors in driving-up NAR usage in preparation for=20
rolling out the analysis to other journals and other subjects.

15:00: Panel discussion: the implications of the Oxford Open=20
research findings

16:00: Closing summary and coffee

16.30: END
