JISC International Colloquium

Thanks to Hazel Woodward for this most interesting link (see below), which
I had the chance to peruse this weekend. Two of the presentations, in
particular, were fascinating and I'm wondering if anyone who attended can
comment about the ensuing discussion. Was there controversy? Agreement?
Suggestions for next steps?

1. Hugh Look presented the JISC Business Models Report, which described 7
different likely possible directions for the library and publishing
communities to pursue. His "conclusions" slide is practical and sensible,
particularly in highlighting today's transitional situation and the fact
that no one model can please all parties.

2. Bo-Christer Bjork offered perspectives about Open Access; what was
most intriguing (at least from the slides on the Web site) was his
suggestion that the "author's choice" models such as those offered by
Springer, Blackwells, and OUP (if I recall correctly), wherein the author
pays $2500-$3000 for articles to appear as OA, could be turned into
consortial-type arrangements with the publisher.

Both of these talks are at that crossroads where access and licensing (or
at least the pricing part of licensing) intersect.

So, it would be great to hear from some of you who attended this event.

Thank you, Ann Okerson/Yale Library
