Scholarly Communications Events at ALA Annual



At the upcoming 2005 ALA Annual conference in Chicago, Ill. occurring from June 23-29.

SPARC-ACRL Forum and ACRL Scholarly Communications Discussion Group:
THREE BIG IDEAS TRANSFORMING SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION

Sunday, June 26, 2005, 3:00-5:00 p.m.:

Three important trends are changing scholarly communication, and
thus changing the role of libraries and people's access to information.

SPARC-ACRL Forum:

Saturday, June 25, 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.:

Three speakers will present the idea they are working to develop:

-- John Wilbanks, executive director of Science Commons, will present The
Commons by discussing the legal mechanisms that encourage sharing of
intellectual property.

-- Debra Lappin, public policy advisor to SPARC and the Alliance for
Taxpayer Access, will describe Taxpayer Access, or the campaign for
federal policies that expand access to publicly funded research; and

-- John Price Wilkin, Associate University Librarian at the University of
Michigan, will talk about "Googlization," which is the development of
online search tools and the mass digitization of collections so that more
people can take advantage of the Internet's promise in easily distributing
information.

The moderator, Ray English, director of libraries, Oberlin College and
chair, ACRL Scholarly Communications Committee, will take questions from
the floor following the presentations.

A panel of three librarians will start the discussion with responses to the Forum presentations. The panel:
