TAYLOR & FRANCIS ACQUIRES MARCEL DEKKER

In a surprise announcement, U.K. publisher Taylor & Francis announced that
it has struck a deal to acquire science publisher Marcel Dekker, Inc. The
deal for Dekker's scientific, technical and medical publishing assets is
for $138.6 million. Dekker's sales for 2002 were reportedly $42 million.
New York-based Dekker, founded in 1963, publishes 78 journals and roughly
200 new books annually, with a backlist of over 3000 titles. The
acquisition is yet another for the rapidly expanding T&F group, which has
spent nearly $275 million in acquiring Swets & Zeitlinger Publishers, CRC
Press, and Frank Cass. In a statement, CEO David Smith said that T&F was
an "acquisitive company," part of a strategy to grow the business. Smith
also said that the deal would strengthen T&F's footprint in the
increasingly consolidated STM market--even while acknowledging that the
STM market is under strain. "While the U.S. market is challenging," said
Smith, "this is a good opportunity to extend our presence in the largest
segment of the global STM market." Calls to Dekker for comment were not
immediately returned by press time.
