PNAS PARTICIPATES IN AGORA/FAO PROGRAM
New initiative provides developing countries free or low-cost access to
scientific literature

Washington, DC - PNAS is pleased to announce its participation in the
AGORA/FAO program. An initiative of the UN's Food and Agricultural
Organization (FAO), the AGORA program provides researchers and academics
in some of the world's poorest countries free or low-cost access to
scientific literature in food, nutrition, agriculture and related
biological, environmental and social sciences. PNAS joins with several
major scientific publishers, Cornell University, Mann Library and the
World Health Organization in supporting the long-term goal of AGORA-to
increase the quality and effectiveness of agricultural research and
training in low income food deficit countries.

The AGORA website is based on tools and systems developed by the World
Health Organization for a similar service in health called HINARI (Health
Internetwork Access to Research Initiative). PNAS has participated in the
HINARI project since 2003.

"We at PNAS are deeply committed to ensuring seamless access to the
scientific research we publish, especially in countries facing economic
hardship," said Diane M. Sullenberger, Executive Editor, PNAS. "We are
pleased to contribute PNAS content to the AGORA/FAO program and wholly
support the success of this important initiative."

Through AGORA, more than 69 countries with per capita income of less than
US $1000, will have internet access to a collection of more than 400
scientific journals.

PNAS The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS),
established in 1914, publishes research reports, commentaries, reviews,
special features, colloquium papers, and actions of the Academy. PNAS is a
