RE: OPEN ACCESS INITIATIVE FROM THE COMPANY OF BIOLOGISTS



The cost to the author is not stated in this press release (nor on the
link given). It can be found on the submission pages of their three
excellent journals. In each case it is $800 (or L500, or 800 euros).

Although all such experiments are most welcome, I am still considering the
implications of a journal some of whose articles are freely accessible and
some of whose are not. It will be interesting to observe the proportion.

The Company of Biologists announces that - from January 2004 - its
journals - Development, Journal of Cell Science and The Journal of
Experimental Biology - will be offering authors the option of "open
access."... Authors choosing to take advantage of the open access
alternative will be charged a publication fee, which, as an introductory
offer, will be heavily subsidised by the Company of Biologists....
